Everyone knew Clark Kent as a news reporter that always wore a suit and tie and those nerdy glasses. He was well liked, but was pretty much an average guy. Nobody ever expected that he would be the one who would go into the phone booth, take off the coat and tie and those nerdy glasses, and emerge wearing the famous red cape and blue underwear. Underneath that exterior, he was Superman. He was faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, able to leap tall buildings in a single bound. Everyone knew they were safe when Superman arrived on the scene.
Husbands, you may be the average guy. You may not be strong and athletic, or at least not anymore. You may not have taken the world by storm in your career or other achievements. You may not even consider yourself to be the world’s greatest husband or dad. But you can be the one that wears the blue underwear. How? It’s summed up in Ephesians 5:25, which says, “Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.”
What woman would not see her husband as Superman if she knew that she was the most important human being in his world? More important than his job. More important than his friends. More important than his parents, his kids, his golf, his ministry, his stuff, his desires. What if she knew he was willing to lay down his life, in its entirety, for her? That’s what Christ did for the church, and that’s what husbands are commanded to do for their wives.
Husbands, love your wives. You may be Clark Kent on the outside, but she’ll know you’re wearing the blue underwear!
