I believe that God has a plan for my life. I can’t tell you what that plan is, because I don’t know beyond this moment what He has planned for me. So if I don’t know what He has planned for me, how can I know that I’m doing His will for my life?
It seems that we often think of God’s will for our life as “Where does God want me to live,” and “What career does God want me to pursue?” We want to know what God has planned for us down the road. But I don’t know very many people that have had that kind of revelation from God.
We were talking about this in our small group last night. Do you think Moses, as he grew up in the house of Pharaoh, knew that one day God would choose him to lead the Israelites out of Egypt ? Or what about Joseph, when he was sold into slavery and then left in prison for years? Do you think he knew that God would put him in a place to provide for his people during severe famine? I doubt either one of them had any idea of what God’s will would be for his entire life. They lived in the moment, just as we do. But God used them for great things.
Here is what I do know that God wants me to do. Love God will all my heart, soul, mind and strength, and love my neighbor as I love myself. That is God’s will for me to follow every single day. I can get out of bed every morning and say, with assurance, “I know what God’s will is for me today.” That is my purpose. I was born with this purpose.
God may choose to do something spectacular through me one day. He may not. He may do something spectacular and I may never know it. But if I live each day doing what I know is His will, one day I will hear Him say “Well done, my good and faithful servant.”
