I remember an old hymn that we used to sing in church titled “Count Your Blessings.” The chorus goes like this:
“Count your blessings, name them one by one.
Count your blessings, see what God has done.
Count your blessings, name them one by one.
Count your many blessings, see what God has done.”
Earlier this year I wrote an article called “Monuments”, in which I wrote about how encouraging and strengthening it can be to recall those monuments in your life where you have seen God work. I felt the need to do this yesterday as I prayed, to recall the monuments that God has placed in my life. I was able to go all the way back to the beginning of my seventh grade year in school and recall ways that God has provided for me and for my family throughout the years. I was encouraged as I talked with God about those times. It was an act of worship as well, because by recalling those times, I was acknowledging God’s power, His love, His grace and His mercy.
I was thinking about this yesterday during our Guatemala mission team reunion. We were watching a video of pictures that were taken during our trip, and I was reminded of what we saw God do, both in us and through us. I then realized that nearly all of the monuments I had recalled during my prayer time were monuments of when God provided material blessings. But there have also been many monuments where God has worked in areas other than material blessings. I have more praying to do today, to recall those monuments as well!
